History
James Tuckerman was on his way to becoming high-flying corporate PR person when he left his job to start his own company. During the process he realised that the business magazines on offer to business professionals fell into two groups: magazines for big businesses and magazines which deal with the basic mechanics of small business.
He decided that he would start a magazine that would fill two niche areas: the first would be its focus. His magazine would target small businesses that were on their way to becoming larger businesses, and he would offer something that moved away from the dryness of current business reporting.
He moved back into his parent’s house and used his personal savings (and credit card) to fund the first issues of Australian Anthill, managing retail channels and selling advertising during the week and writing the content during the weekend. Tuckerman would write all of the editorial for the first three issues.
In September of 2003, the first magazine launched. In roughly two years the readership had grown to 30,000 and now it is closer to 50,000.
In 2004, it won the Australian Publishers Association Bell Award for Best Small Publisher, a feat that it repeated in 2005.
Australian Anthill also has a website, Anthill Online, and runs several competitions for up and coming businesses and business people.
The Anthill 'story' was broadcast by ABC TV in April 2006, as part of Alan Kohler's Inside Business.
