Overview

This submission raises six points regarding gaps in the current innovation system:

  1. Level of funding — this has been noticed in senior positions in the US and UK and is giving Australia a negative reputation
  2. Structure of funding — government programs are often based on overseas models, but are poorly implemented blunting their effectiveness
  3. High School Education — these schools have outdated equipment and offer low levels of teacher job satisfaction ... making it hard to lay the foundations of innovation
  4. University Interactions with “Industry” — this is much lower in Australia than in Europe or the US, providing a gap between research and commercial outcomes
  5. Innovation “Models” — Innovation comes in many forms from many sectors, there should be a mentor system to help people from non-institutionalised systems
  6. The Barnyard — lack of funding makes universities and departments compete for the meagre feed on offer, diverting research resources to this contest and weakening all the participating projects
