The 2008 West Australian Inventor of the Year awards are now taking nominations and submissions. It is being hosted by the WA Innovation Centre, which will hosting a number of seminars until the end of April to help get entrants ready.

This competition offers one of Australia's riches prizes for inventors, boasting more than $300,000 in money and prizes across three categories.

Competition categories

They are:

  • Early stages
  • Development
  • Ready for market

There is also a Schools Competition challenging primary and high school students to invent something new, or modify an existing product. This year also adds Remote Schools category to encourage rural participation.

Contest timetable

The first round the competition closes June 12, so get your written submissions together and ready for the judges. If your written submission is selected for the second round, you will have to prepare a presentation for the judges of the device or idea. Seminars will be run at the WA Innovation Centre to help prepare competitors and hone their presentation skills.

The first round of presentations will take place between September 1 and 3. Six finalists will be selected for a final, 15 minute presentation, on October 1,to determine the winners.
