Overview
This submission argues the importance of mathematics to innovation citing its role in such activities as data mining, risk analysis, financial analysis, information technology, engineering and physical sciences. It also contends that Australian mathematicians are leaving the country to work overseas, while the percentage of math graduates is half of the OECD average and falling and higher mathematics studies is also on the decline in high schools, partially because of a lack of teachers.
It suggests a series of actions to be taken including teacher training, a career path campaign, mathematics courses must be comparable to those taught internationally, and that universities should support statistical consulting services.
