Overview

This submission presents 13 ideas to the panel.

  1. The government should increase the 2% budget for scientific research, especially when it is considered on a global context
  2. Australia is experiencing a mineral boom and needs to invest in the future now
  3. Improving education at every level is vital
  4. Research between sectors and silos needs to be integrated
  5. Research integration between sectors is even more important
  6. Education and health should be supported using bipartisan, whole of Government and whole of country approaches. Initiatives coming out of the UK are an example of progress in this area.
  7. The physical infrastructure of research facilities need further investment
  8. Young scientists and engineers need to have clearer career paths in research
  9. We need more support for all talented innovators. This means considering the likes of child care facilities and family-friendly policies.
  10. SMEs have trouble accessing innovations schemes. A sliding scale offering more support at this end could be useful
  11. The bureaucratic approaches encouraged by Government often limit the ability of industry and academia to implement innovative solutions
  12. Public good should be reintroduced into the range of activities by which a CRC is assessed
  13. The government needs to engage in “world” science projects and organisations
