Overview
This submission presents 13 ideas to the panel.
- The government should increase the 2% budget for scientific research, especially when it is considered on a global context
- Australia is experiencing a mineral boom and needs to invest in the future now
- Improving education at every level is vital
- Research between sectors and silos needs to be integrated
- Research integration between sectors is even more important
- Education and health should be supported using bipartisan, whole of Government and whole of country approaches. Initiatives coming out of the UK are an example of progress in this area.
- The physical infrastructure of research facilities need further investment
- Young scientists and engineers need to have clearer career paths in research
- We need more support for all talented innovators. This means considering the likes of child care facilities and family-friendly policies.
- SMEs have trouble accessing innovations schemes. A sliding scale offering more support at this end could be useful
- The bureaucratic approaches encouraged by Government often limit the ability of industry and academia to implement innovative solutions
- Public good should be reintroduced into the range of activities by which a CRC is assessed
- The government needs to engage in “world” science projects and organisations
