Overview

The Strategic Initiatives group’s submission is based on nine observations that focus on:

  1. AusIndustry’s lack of support for commercialistion even though it is the hardest part of innovation
  2. AusIndustry programs are hard to access because applicants aren’t aware of why their grant application fails or succeeds
  3. Public procurement is often at odds with the government’s stated desire for innovation, and has institutionalised choosing conventional technology and process over innovative options
  4. The lack of liaison between Austrade and AusIndustry
  5. The attitudes towards new technology extends to environmentally friendly devices
  6. The lack of domestic venture capital for innovation in Australia
  7. The problem with the R&D Tax Concessions and Export Marketing Development programs paying out only once a year
  8. The lack of quality in research (phone interviews) on the effectiveness of government departments/ programs
  9. Academia is disinclined to engage with the private sector

The observations on Public procurement are the most detailed and make an excellent case for the Government to become a major client for innovative technology and services.
