Overview
The Strategic Initiatives group’s submission is based on nine observations that focus on:
- AusIndustry’s lack of support for commercialistion even though it is the hardest part of innovation
- AusIndustry programs are hard to access because applicants aren’t aware of why their grant application fails or succeeds
- Public procurement is often at odds with the government’s stated desire for innovation, and has institutionalised choosing conventional technology and process over innovative options
- The lack of liaison between Austrade and AusIndustry
- The attitudes towards new technology extends to environmentally friendly devices
- The lack of domestic venture capital for innovation in Australia
- The problem with the R&D Tax Concessions and Export Marketing Development programs paying out only once a year
- The lack of quality in research (phone interviews) on the effectiveness of government departments/ programs
- Academia is disinclined to engage with the private sector
The observations on Public procurement are the most detailed and make an excellent case for the Government to become a major client for innovative technology and services.
